  1. Donovan here. Each image depicts overcoming obstacles in somewhat different ways. The argument I'm seeing is, people have the power to change their circumstances, even if they feel that they lack such power. The appearance of the Nike logo in the photo on the left and the appearance of the word "Nike" in the image in the bottom-right corner suggest that the textual arguments focus on physical bodies. I'm even wondering if the image is intended to be an ad for Nike.

  2. The mind is stronger than the body and can overcome the weaknesses of the body. You have the power to listen to and obey your body or resist what it is telling you. Or something like that.

  3. The argument here is that exercise is a mental pursuit. The first image shows a woman working out, and all she has are the clothes on her body, going along with the accompanying quote suggesting all you really need is yourself. The second shows a woman entrapped by a ribbon that is emanating from her head, visually depicting a body being trapped by a mind. The last image is a quote about redefining impossible, suggesting that "impossible" is not a hard and fast rule, but a construct of the mind.

The colors really stuck out to me on this one. They are very bold and bright...I feel like a personal trainer is yelling at me to push harder when I look at the image as a whole.

The argument also seems to be geared towards women. The first two images show actual female subjects, and the last is pink (culturally pink is a feminine color).

  4. The visual argument here seems to be related to self-realization and a challenge to the mind-body split. Two of the images seem to be Nike advertisements. One, showing a fit young woman exercising intently, contains this text: EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS ALREADY INSIDE. The other Nike related image is simply text on a pink background: I BELIEVE IN REDEFINING MY IMPOSSIBLE. –NIKE. The final image is a woman’s silhouette surrounded by these words: DON’T LET YOUR MIND BULLY YOUR BODY. The two Nike images suggest that one should push oneself to achieve physically and the willpower and stamina that are required to push oneself beyond the limit is found within. The other image complicates this argument though by arguing that the mind shouldn’t bully the body. This suggests to me that the drive to achieve should be tempered with kindness to oneself. This conflict harkens back to the mind/body split and gendered notions about masculinity and femininity. Masculinity has been traditionally associated with the mind and femininity has been associated with the body. The Nike images seem to suggest that women need to overcome their lack of drive or willpower, to tap into a masculine-associated traits of drive and ambition, to achieve a satisfying embodiment. The third images suggests that there is a need for more balance between the mind and body, and one should not be strained in service to the other. - Jenny Moore

  5. There is a sense that this is a successful argument because there is some agreement on the evidence connected to claims. Nice.
